Faith to Action Network Partners Engage in the 68th Session on Commission on Status of Women in New York
Faith to Action Network partners Assiyah-part of the Muhammadiyah network from Indonesia and Cordaid participated in the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) at the UN Headquarters in New York.
CSW is an essential platform for discussing global gender equality and women’s rights and enables civil society actors, Governments, scholars, and activists to engage, learn, and renew commitments on gender equality and women rights. Delegates of ‘Aisyiyah, Secretary General of ‘Aisyiyah Tri Hastuti Nur Rochimah, and Chair of ‘Aisyiyah Masyitoh Chusnan, shared views and experiences in empowering marginalized women.
The Cordaid team was part of the civil society group advising the delegation of the Dutch government during their negotiations. The discussions this year were centered around “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”. The negotiations were tough but successful amid increasing anti-gender equality rhetoric.
Recommendations highlight the need for:
- Creating equitable economic systems with gender-focused poverty reduction, promoting pay transparency, and adopting feminist policies.
- Boosting financial independence and inclusion for women and girls by securing their employment rights and improving access to education and financial services.
- Eradicating all forms of sexual and gender-based violence, including online and technology-facilitated, with strong policies for prevention and support systems such as safe shelters.
- Enhancing poverty awareness through detailed and gender-specific data analysis to guide effective policy.
- Involving youth in decision-making and policy development to tackle poverty and gender inequality, and supporting their participation in global discussions.
Cordaid event with Caritas Internationalis, “Fragile Contexts, Strong Women,” highlighted the role of religious and faith-based organisations in promoting women’s leadership.
